Atty. Edward King L. Chua is a Senior Associate of the Firm with four years of experience in the field of intellectual property law.
Leveraging his technical expertise and previous experience as a patent examiner, Edward is primarily involved in the prosecution and maintenance of patents. He is also involved in patent litigation where he assisted in defending manufacturers of generic medicines from patent infringement suits and in the cancellation of evergreening patents. He also assists the Firm’s clients in conducting Freedom-to-Operate searches especially on important active pharmaceutical ingredients.
Aside from patents, Edward is also handling the prosecution and maintenance of trademarks. He is also assisting in trademark opposition, infringement, and unfair competition cases. Recently, he is part of the team assisting a Korean luxury eyewear brand in opposing identical or confusingly similar trademark applications as well as in the defense of a generic drug manufacturer in a spurious trademark infringement suit.
Prior to joining the Firm in 2021, Edward was an associate at law firm practicing intellectual property law and maritime labor law.
Prior to becoming a lawyer, Edward was a patent examiner under the Chemical Technology Examining Division of the Bureau of Patents. During his stint as a patent examiner, he underwent trainings on substantive examination conducted by foreign intellectual property offices. He received his Juris Doctor degree from the Ateneo de Manila University in 2019. He earned from the same university his Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry in 2012 and his Bachelor of Science degree in Materials Science and Engineering in 2013. He was admitted as a Certified Chemist in 2012 by the Professional Regulatory Commission.
